We’re getting ready to treat more than 600 men, women and children to smiles and full bellies during our annual “Christmas in July” feast and activities.

The event is designed to remind the community that the homeless and hurting eat every day – not just during the holidays.

Each attendee receives a hearty welcome from Santa and Mrs. Claus as they enter the Mission on Record Street. There, they’ll be treated to a full turkey dinner and dessert served by over 50 volunteers.

On the way out, adults will receive bags of hygiene products while children get wrapped presents to make their day special.

“It’s always a great event,” said Tim Mikes, the Mission’s chaplain. “It’s usually a long, hot wait for some. They’re tired. But the moment they come through those doors, everything changes.

“We love to see the smiles and hear laughs from people that look like they hadn’t done that in a long time. It’s such a great time for everybody.”

If you like to help with the meal, we can use items such as hams, turkeys, pies and soft drinks.

We also need hundreds of travel-sized hygiene items such as soap, deodorant, razors, toothpaste/toothbrushes, sunscreen, aspirin/non-aspirin, bandages, floss and the like.

If you or your organization would like to help with these items or at the event itself, please contact Luis Santoni, director of development, at (775) 323-0386, Ext. 14 or at luis@rsgm.org

Financial donations are as easy as clicking on the “Donate” button at the top of the page.
